Amy Lawrence is a seasoned journalist who has been a part of the large sports broadcasting profession for a while. This diva is more than just a reporter. Keep your composure until the very end so we can go over every detail.
Amy Lawrence grew up in an Italian-American-Polish family. Lawrence loved basketball as a child and cheered for the Denver Broncos and Boston Celtics. She listened to the radio stations because cable TV wasn’t an option, and she was interested in sports. The play-by-play commentary was something Lawrence listened to her entire childhood and adolescence.
Her youthful ambition was to become
“the first female Johnny Most, the first woman to serve as the radio voice of the Celtics.”
Lawrence earned a communication degree from Messiah College. Lawrence then traveled to Syracuse University in New York to complete her graduate studies. During her time at the institution, she grew to admire the basketball teams. Afterward, she began recording her play-by-play analysis of the women’s games while watching them from the stands using a tape recorder. Later, the campus radio station manager allowed her to do her first “real” play-by-play analysis.
Amy Lawrence worked as one of the play-by-play announcers for the Lebanon High School boys’ basketball team in New Hampshire a few years later. After the team “battled into the state championship game,” the Boston Globe noted that she was “the lone female in the state doing play-by-play.”
Afterward, she quit her job as a play-by-play announcer and began working as a News & Sports Director for a radio station with a 100,000-watt signal in Woodward, Oklahoma. She provided the station coverage of basketball, high school football, and American Legion baseball. Following that, she made her way to Oklahoma City to call softball games for “the University of Oklahoma at the Women’s College World Series.”
Over the next years, she would report on sporting events for “the University of Rhode Island as well as the Big East” on radio and television.
