Early Life
Gary A. Condit was born on April 21, 1948, in Woodland Junction, Oklahoma, near Salina, to Jean and the Rev. Adrian Condit. Condit’s father preached at Little Rock Church, which the family considered a second home, to the town’s Baptist community. Gary’s family, including his two brothers and sister, went to church four times a week.
Condit’s family moved to Tulsa when Gary was 14 because his father’s prospects as a preacher were better there. His family lived next door to the church where his father preached in Tulsa. In addition, Nathan Hale High School was Condit’s alma mater.
Gary worked as a roustabout in the oil fields for a summer when he was young, earning enough money to buy a 1964 Chevy Impala that got him into trouble.
Court records reveal that a “Gary Adrian Condit” was ticketed three times in Tulsa in a year: once for speeding through town, once for running a stop sign, and once for driving without a license, according to the Chicago Tribune. In each case, he failed to appear in court, causing authorities to issue an arrest warrant.

Condit’s friendship with Levy became the talk of the town after the news broke. After contacting her parents for help, he offered $10,000 in prize money and issued a statement characterizing Levy as “a beautiful girl and a terrific friend.”
